Start & finish

A compact walk through republican and Communist Shanghai

Finish at Zhou Mansion on Sinan Road. Continue by public streets toward Dapuqiao or Xintiandi Metro. A shorter version ends at Fuxing Park; one or two interiors turn this into a half-day visit.

Start with the 1921 meeting site, then walk toward the streets where journals, language teaching and political organizing overlapped. Historic site and new exhibition building are distinct.

Compare the small shikumen meeting house with the newer exhibition hall. They belong to different moments in the site’s history.

Take public Xingye Road to Madang Road, turn north, then follow Huaihai Middle Road west to the Lane 567 entrance. Cross Chongqing Road only at a marked crossing. Do not rely on a commercial-compound shortcut.

The old Yuyangli address connects language teaching and youth organization. Find Lane 567 on Huaihai Middle Road; the street pin deliberately marks the approach, not an unverified inner door.

The threshold from the main road into the lane, and the way language teaching supported political organization.

Return to Huaihai Middle Road and use the public Sinan Road and Nanchang Road sidewalks to Lane 100. The historic Yuyangli lanes must not be assumed to form an open through route.

A magazine office and an organizing address give this history a human scale. New Youth was part of an argument about language, culture and political change. Publishing and organization became connected here; the outcome was not obvious from the beginning.

The small shikumen doorway and the distance between the two Yuyangli addresses.

This is a later commemorative layer within a former concession-era public garden, not a place where Marx or Engels visited. The contrast is the point of the stop.

How a political monument sits inside a French-style park plan.

Sun Yat-sen’s Shanghai residence

Sun Yat-sen supplies the republican and Nationalist connection within a compact walk. His Shanghai home puts domestic scale beside public political ambition. I would read it alongside the 1946 office at the final stop, keeping the different dates and political circumstances clear.

The residential scale of a site associated with republican state-building.

7 Xiangshan Road, Huangpu, Shanghai上海市黄浦区香山路7号

Access: A mapped main entrance faces Xiangshan Road. The museum’s 28 June notice says it reopened partially on 30 June 2026, with only the former residence open and admission half price. Confirm today’s areas and prices; do not assume the whole complex has reopened. Exterior viewing remains the route’s baseline.
