Start & finish
Begin on the public plaza facing Jing’an Temple, near Jing’an Temple Metro. Follow current station signs to street level; use marked crossings.
Finish at Majestic Theatre on Jiangning Road. Continue by public streets to West Nanjing Road Metro, choosing a currently open, signed entrance.
Jing’an Temple frontage
静安寺外侧
Begin outside the temple, where the roofline sits against the commercial skyline. The contrast is visible without buying a ticket; the current building contains repeated rebuilding, rather than 1770 years of unchanged fabric.
Roof brackets, eaves and the street relationship. Keep the functioning temple distinct from a theme-park set.
1686 West Nanjing Road, Jing’an静安区南京西路1686号Access: The public-pavement view is free. Temple interiors have separate admission and opening hours. Check the current notice and respect worship and photography restrictions.
Official visitor informationUse a signed entrance into Jing’an Park. If visiting the temple first, return to a marked West Nanjing Road crossing; do not cross diagonally.
Jing’an Park
静安公园
A useful change of pace before continuing east: a small park, old trees, bamboo and a view back toward the temple district.
I would pause in the shade here before the longer paved section toward the Exhibition Centre.
1649 West Nanjing Road, Jing’an静安区南京西路1649号Access: The park is free, subject to posted access. Visit by day and check gate signs. Use marked crossings on West Nanjing Road.
Official visitor informationLeave the park on public streets and approach the Exhibition Centre’s exterior via Tongren Road and Middle Yan’an Road. Do not shortcut through event grounds.
Shanghai Exhibition Centre frontage
上海展览中心外侧
A different account of Shanghai’s international connections: the former Sino-Soviet Friendship Building is a useful counterpoint to the district’s pre-war villas and present-day retail architecture.
Read the main axis and tower from a public sidewalk; don’t assume an exhibition ticket buys general building access.
1000 Middle Yan’an Road, Jing’an静安区延安中路1000号Access: View from the public street. Grounds and halls can be ticketed or closed for events, with temporary traffic restrictions. Continue around the compound on public streets.
Official visitor informationContinue on public Middle Yan’an Road, Weihai Road and North Maoming Road toward Zhangyuan. Use only signed open lanes; do not shortcut through the Exhibition Centre or the unfinished eastern precinct.
Zhangyuan frontage & optional open lanes
张园外侧及可选开放街巷
A shikumen ensemble reworked into high-end retail. The useful question is what remains legible as housing once shops replace households: doorways, lane widths and the rhythm of repeated units.
Look at two adjacent doorways and compare their detailing. This is a commercial reuse precinct, not an invitation into occupied residential lanes.
Western precinct: Lane 258 North Maoming Road / Lane 588 Weihai Road, Jing’an静安区茂名北路258弄/威海路588弄(张园西区)Access: Use the western public frontage and only lanes currently signed open. The district identifies western access at Lane 258 North Maoming Road and Lane 588 Weihai Road. Parts of the eastern precinct remain under redevelopment; if lanes are closed, continue by the Maoming frontage to West Nanjing Road.
Official visitor informationFollow the public pedestrian street to West Nanjing Road, continue west to Jiangning Road, then turn toward the theatre. Enter Zhangyuan lanes only as a confirmed optional detour.
Majestic Theatre exterior
美琪大戏院外侧
Finish at an operating theatre rather than treating the district as a collection of preserved facades. Fan Wenzhao’s 1941 building brings pre-war entertainment architecture into the present tense.
Look at the entrance canopy and massing; then check the current programme if you want the evening to continue.
66 Jiangning Road, Jing’an (official venue/government address)静安区江宁路66号(以剧院当日公告为准)Access: The exterior stop is free. Performances and interior access follow the theatre’s current ticketed programme.
