Start & finish

Start at the former French Pavilion inside Expo Culture Park, west of Lupu Bridge. Metro approaches add roughly 10–20 minutes depending on the open exit and entrance.

Return east via park paths to Jikun Road and Shibo Avenue Metro; optional Twin Hills ascent separate.

Former French Pavilion

An Expo building now used for art. Start with its heavy outer frame and the change from temporary national display to permanent urban infrastructure.

Compare the pavilion’s grid with the deliberately softer landscape around it.

Access: The exterior is the free stop. Interior exhibitions have separate admission and schedules; check the operator’s current programme.

France→Time Marks: use park pedestrian network, not Shibo Avenue road tunnel.

Time Marks Avenue

The most useful interpretive stop in the park: the landscape itself sets out an industrial site, the 2010 Expo, and the newer park as three distinct periods.

Walk a short section rather than treating it as a single monument; read the changes in paving and planting.

Access: Open park path. Preserve signed pedestrian/cycle separation.

Follow the park’s open pedestrian paths west toward Shenyuan’s exterior. Keep outside admission gates.

Shenyuan exterior approach

A contemporary Jiangnan-style garden inside a contemporary park. I find it more useful to read the walls, rooflines and framed views as a new use of an old vocabulary than to mistake the garden for an ancient survivor.

From the public approach look at the walls, roofs and borrowed views. The enclosed garden is an optional extension.

Open location

Access: Stay outside the garden for the free route. The municipal directory lists separate garden admission: 20 yuan November–March and 30 yuan April–October. Check today’s gate schedule and ticket notice. Use open public paths rather than locked side gates.

Shenyuan→Greenhouse: follow open lake/park paths south; never cut through paid garden.

Shanghai Greenhouse Garden exterior

Retained industrial steel meets curved greenhouse volumes. Look at the structure from the public plaza before deciding whether the plants warrant a separate paid visit.

Look across the greenhouse volumes rather than queueing automatically for a ticket.

Access: The exterior is the free stop. Indoors require separate admission; current event hours and ticket combinations can differ. Check the operator before booking.

Follow open park paths around the greenhouse toward the lake north of Twin Hills. If a signed diversion blocks this connection, return along the open lake path; do not use a road tunnel or enter service areas.

Twin Hills from the north lakeside path

I would end beside the lake and look back at the hills before deciding whether to climb. The 48 m and 37 m peaks are engineered landforms with useful space inside, not remnants of Shanghai’s natural topography.

The green slope conceals hollow construction. Main walk stays at lake level; ascent is optional.

Within Shanghai Expo Culture Park; formal southern Twin Hills access 555 Tongyao Road, Pudong浦东新区上海世博文化公园内,双子山北侧湖畔步道(双子山南侧正式出入口:通耀路555号)
Open location

Access: The lake-level viewpoint is free. A government account reports that Twin Hills reservation management ended on 1 June 2026. An optional ascent remains subject to same-day weather, capacity and signed one-way paths.
