The founder's account
Songmont dates its beginning to 2013, when Fu Song wanted a work bag after returning from maternity leave. In the brand's published account, her user-experience design background met the making skills of her grandmother and other craftspeople in Shanxi. An olive-green tote became the first bag.
The same account describes Wang Jie joining as a co-founder to develop the aesthetic direction. The company's origin story draws a connection between a daily need, a sketch and a made object.
Try a bag with a day's contents in mind
Begin with what you carry, not the volume suggested by a styled photograph. Will your phone fit with its case? Do your keys share a compartment with something easily scratched? If a laptop matters, check actual dimensions and carrying comfort rather than relying on the word 'work'.
Put the bag on in the way you would use it. Adjust the strap, operate the fastening and see how easily you can reach inside. Compare the empty weight with the weight you expect to carry. A dramatic shape is still a tool that has to work for its owner.
The Shanghai store is another designed object
Songmont's current directory lists several Shanghai locations. Two central-city examples checked on 22 October 2026 are 817–819 Huaihai Middle Road and the Rock Bund store at Room 101, Hami Building, 149 Yuanmingyuan Road. The directory describes each space through a distinct architectural or landscape idea.
That offers two things to look at: the bag and the setting around it. Keep them separate when deciding on a purchase. A compelling room can make an afternoon enjoyable without making every object in it right for you. Choose a branch that suits your route and confirm any particular product directly.
Ask about the exact material and service
Request the material description for the specific color and model, its care requirements, what the warranty covers and how repairs would work from your home country. Ask which changes in appearance are expected from ordinary use.
