SHUSHU/TONG: begin with silhouette
Shanghai-based SHUSHU/TONG was founded by Liushu Lei and Yutong Jiang in 2015. Its own brand account emphasizes feminine details, including bows and ruffles, set against a less prim attitude and distinctive silhouettes.
When trying a piece, look beyond the recognizable detail. Where does the volume sit? How does the garment change when you move? Decide whether you enjoy the complete proportion, rather than purchasing a bow as a souvenir of a brand you have heard about.
UMA WANG: give the fabric your attention
Uma Wang, whose Chinese name is Wang Zhi, trained in Shanghai and London and established her label in 2009. The brand's account foregrounds fabrics and tailoring. That offers a different starting point from identifying a motif at a distance.
Look at the way a fabric folds, how much structure it holds and what happens at a seam. Ask about fiber content and care. A quiet-looking garment can contain substantial design work, but the useful test remains whether you like wearing it and can care for it as required.
ICICLE: think about the everyday wardrobe
Founded in Shanghai in 1997, ICICLE describes an approach based on natural materials and clothing for living and working. It is an established company, not a newly discovered independent label. Its presence alongside younger designer names helps show the range within Chinese fashion.
Use your own week as a reference. Would you wear the piece to work, while traveling or to an evening out? Try it with the shoes and clothing you are likely to pair it with. A restrained design still needs to earn a place in your wardrobe.
Build a shopping visit around your taste
The three names are an orientation, not a fixed set of stops or a claim of affiliation. Bring a budget, a few images and an idea of what you want to use. A focused neighborhood visit can be better than crossing the city to collect brand names.
Check current Shanghai stores, stock and appointment requirements before traveling. Read return, alteration and tax-refund conditions with the particular retailer before paying. Ask the shop about the specific piece, price and any available promotions before making a special trip.
