What is happening this October?
The local season is underway. Reporting dated 23 September 2026 described the start of Songjiang's Huangpu River crab harvest. On 20 October, Shanghai Media Group's Kankanews reported harvesting of Chongming's Chong'ao crabs, while noting that larger specimens still needed roughly another week to ten days to mature.
That distinction is useful on 22 October: 'in season' does not mean every origin, size and batch reaches its best moment simultaneously. Ask what the kitchen has received and why it recommends that particular order. A seasonal name is the beginning of the conversation, not a quality guarantee.
Whole crab and crab dishes offer different pleasures
Choose a whole crab when the process is part of the occasion. You are committing time to opening, picking and comparing small mouthfuls. Ask the restaurant to demonstrate if you are unfamiliar with it, and give the meal room in your day.
Picked crab meat can appear in noodles or dishes such as crab meat tofu, featured in the city's food guidance. These are useful alternatives when you want a prepared dish. Ask how the kitchen describes the crab component and what else is in the sauce; a name alone does not tell you proportions, ingredients or preparation.
Use the menu to clarify what you are buying
For a whole crab, establish the quoted size, whether the charge is per crab or by weight, its stated origin and the complete price before it is prepared. For a bowl or shared dish, check the portion and whether the price refers to one person or the table. Avoid assuming that a famous producing area's name applies to every crab on a menu.
Bring the same curiosity to the accompaniment. Taste the crab before deciding how much condiment you want. If you are sharing several rich dishes, leave room for something lighter and ask the restaurant's advice about quantities.
Make it an autumn meal, not an extra stop to rush
A whole-crab meal can become the afternoon's main event. It belongs to a different rhythm from grabbing breakfast on the way to a museum. If someone in your group prefers noodles or another prepared dish, discuss that at the start so the table works for everyone.
Crab-roe noodles are among the food walks' tastings. If you would like a whole-crab meal as well, tell Edward when planning so you can discuss availability, time and the additional cost. For shellfish restrictions, ask about all ingredients and shared preparation before choosing a meal.
