Bring an occasion and a departure date
Tell the maker whether the qipao is for everyday wear, a performance, a wedding or another occasion. Bring reference images, but explain what you like about them: collar height, sleeve, length, line or fabric. A photograph alone does not establish how the garment should feel when you move.
Give your actual departure date at the start. Ask when measurements, fitting, alterations and collection would happen. A trip can be too short for the work you want. Agree a realistic sequence before paying a deposit rather than hoping the schedule will solve itself.
Shanghai-style does not mean one fixed garment
The city's published guide to qipao makers describes different approaches, from detailed handwork and embroidery to contemporary shapes suited to daily use. It identifies China Chapter on South Maoming Road and Longfeng Qipao on North Shaanxi Road among its examples. These are starting points for research, not a current appointment or endorsement of every product.
Compare what a maker actually proposes. Which features are structural, which are decorative and which can be changed for your needs? A less elaborate garment may be the right commission if it is the one you will wear.
Discuss movement as well as measurements
At a fitting, try sitting, walking and moving your arms in the way the occasion requires. Talk about ease, lining, fastening and undergarments. Ask the tailor to explain the effect of any proposed change rather than requesting a tighter fit simply because a still photograph looks sharp.
Fabric is part of that conversation. Ask about fiber content, weight, transparency and care, then consider the climate in which you will use it. Keep a sample or written fabric description with your order when the maker can provide one.
Write down what the quote covers
Confirm the total for cloth, making, fittings and agreed alterations, plus any delivery or shipping. Clarify deposit and cancellation terms, who will perform the fittings and what happens if further adjustment is needed. Keep the agreed design, dates and receipt together.
Guiding and garment charges are separate. Edward's shopping service can help with questions and communication, while the atelier must confirm its own work and timetable. No specific completion time, discount or fit outcome is promised by this background note. Recheck a maker's current location and availability before setting out.
