What the Huangpu feature tells us

Reporter Song Mei's 13 April 2026 Shanghai Huangpu feature describes Maya as operating at the same Maoming Road address since 1998. It places founder Wang Xiurong and her husband Liu Lijian within the story of Hongbang, or Red Gang, tailoring, then follows their work through fitting, adjustment and craft transmission.

The profile follows an individual garment beyond its first fitting, through later alteration and repair. Song Mei's feature for Shanghai Huangpu offers a closer look at the people and work behind that long relationship.

Why that story matters to a commission

A tailoring conversation needs to move from a general admiration for craft to a particular garment. What will you wear it for? What matters about movement, climate and formality? A maker can respond more precisely to those needs than to an instruction to make something 'classic'.

Bring examples, then discuss what can and cannot be transferred from a photograph to your body and chosen cloth. Ask the tailor to explain the proposed method, fitting stages and decisions that remain open after the first measurement.

Questions worth taking into the workroom

Ask who will cut and fit the garment; which parts of the pattern are developed for you; what the first fitting will allow you to change; and which work is included in the quote. Let the atelier explain its actual process instead of assuming that every use of 'custom' describes the same method.

Then establish the calendar. Give your departure date and ask what schedule the team can commit to for this commission. An exceptional rush story in a published feature is not a normal lead-time promise. Collection, shipping and future adjustments deserve their own clear agreement.

Planning a visit

Maya lists its flagship at 128 South Maoming Road, with telephone +86 21 6472 4500. Contact the team before making a special trip to confirm appointments, the garment you have in mind and a fitting schedule that suits your stay.

A future conversation with the maker could explore one pattern, one fitting change and one repaired garment in depth. For now, use the original feature for the makers' own words and photographs, and contact the atelier to establish present availability before traveling. Guiding fees and garment charges are separate.
