Read three different things
Start with the shell composition, then find the lining composition and the care label. They answer separate questions. The large word beside a rack may describe a collection; the sewn-in label identifies the garment. Photograph that label with the shop’s permission if you need time to compare.
The Woolmark Company explains that its certification checks more than fibre content: its programme includes tests covering durability, colourfastness and laundering performance against the relevant specification. That is a useful example of evidence attached to a material claim. It does not mean every wool coat is certified, or that a certified product suits every climate and wearer.
Compare cloth behavior, not just softness
Ask to handle two coats of a similar cut. Notice which holds a shape and which falls around the body. Examine how the cloth behaves at a folded cuff or lapel, and compare the visual surface under ordinary light. Decide whether you want a coat that supplies structure or follows the layers beneath it.
A soft first touch is only one part of the decision. Consider the places that will meet a shoulder strap, seat belt or desk edge. Ask how the exact cloth is expected to change with wear and what the maker recommends for storage and cleaning. An answer about this material is more valuable than a general promise of luxury.
Use the lining and pockets
Try the coat over the layer you intend to wear, rather than the lightest layer available. Close it, sit down and reach toward an imaginary rail or door handle. Check whether the lining follows the movement and whether the sleeves allow your inner layer to sit comfortably.
Use the pockets with your hands relaxed. Put your phone in the intended pocket with permission. A pocket that photographs elegantly may be awkward for your own routine. Check the position of the fastening while seated and the way the hem moves around your knees. These small tests connect the cut to a day outside the fitting room.
Buy for the life after Shanghai
Tell the shop where you will wear the coat and how you travel. A garment chosen for a brief Shanghai winter visit may have a different job at home. Confirm the actual care instructions, alteration cost and return terms. If commissioning, have the maker record the agreed layers and intended ease alongside the measurements.
Choose the coat for your climate, the layers you wear and the care it needs. Ask to compare the available cloths and linings before deciding.
