The body and the household
Curated by Pi Li, the exhibition gathers more than 40 works and groups from over 30 years. Lin makes cotton, hair, domestic tools and bodily forms carry experiences of gender, family, motherhood, ageing and illness. The scale changes; the work of binding, stitching and handling remains central.
Braiding (1998) stretches a self-image into a field of thread. Bound and Unbound (1997) wraps everyday objects, then brings cutting and release into the same vocabulary. In Gain and Loss (2014), skeletal forms and discarded implements unsettle the practical identity of familiar tools. These are specific material transformations, with the labour still visible in their making.
A Shanghai return
Lin was born in Taiyuan in 1961 and trained in Beijing before living and working in New York. Shanghai has followed her practice before: Rockbund Art Museum presented Systems in 2018. PSA’s exhibition places those developments within a longer account of the artist, as the ninth instalment of its Chinese Contemporary Art Collection Series.
