Images, cloth and political memory
The exhibition works through film, video, painting, textiles and archives. Its artists include Renée Green, Hao Jingban, Hao Liang, Onyeka Igwe, Eric N. Mack, Tuan Andrew Nguyen, Pope.L, Cauleen Smith and Wang Tuo. Their different media trace how political ideas and memories pass between places and generations.
Césaire is joined in the exhibition’s historical frame by Amy Ashwood Garvey, Eslanda Robeson, Shirley Graham Du Bois and Grace Lee Boggs. Their work connects Pan-African organizing, performance, publishing and community activism. This gives the broad subject of revolutionary history identifiable people and forms of cultural labour.
Two exhibitions in dialogue
The museum is also presenting Peng Zuqiang’s Short-term Histories. His three-channel Afternoon Hearsay (2025), co-commissioned with The Common Guild in Glasgow, moves from analogue film into a digital installation. The pairing brings institutional archives and personal, fragmentary forms of memory into the same autumn programme.
Renée Green’s What Time Is It (GLB) works turn text into printed fabric. Wang Tuo’s Distorting Words (2019) uses a three-channel moving-image installation. These concrete differences in material and duration give the group exhibition its range.
