Pattern travels with people and materials

Ceramics, metalwork, jewellery, jade, glass, carpets, painting and sculpture give the exhibition a broader material range than its title might suggest. A pattern travels differently on a woven carpet, a glazed tile or a hard stone cup. The connections reach across the Islamic world and into Asia and Europe.

The exhibition’s selected works include a Turkish jade cup set with gold and rubies from the collection of Louis XIV, an Iranian bottle with dragon decoration and a Turkish tile with prunus branches, tulips, carnations and clouds. Those objects put courtly collecting, luxury craftsmanship and travelling botanical and animal motifs into the same account. The Chinese influence on bird-and-flower decoration is part of curator Judith Hénon’s discussion of these exchanges.

Three artistic worlds under one roof

India, Iran and Ottoman Turkey developed distinct court cultures and workshops. Placing them together brings shared materials and routes of exchange into view while preserving those geographical differences. The Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris also participates in the exhibition. The selection gives decorative arts the scale of a major international loan exhibition, alongside MAP’s concurrent presentation of European painting.
